Imaginary Forces

SPOTLIGHT: STEINER KEIRCE
APR 18, 2008

Steiner is a freelance producer with Imaginary Forces.  He's worked with IF for years and has had a hand in many of the projects you'll see on this site.  Here are his thoughts…

On where he's from: Born in San Antonio, TX and graduated with a double major in film studies and fine art at Dartmouth College.

On how he got into the business: I was a location scout in NYC when, in 1999, I went to New Zealand to work on a film. On my way back I stopped in LA and was introduced to Kyle Cooper [now with Prologue]. I started off as his assistant at IF, then worked on his feature film in Chicago, IL. IF seemed like a great mixture of art/design/film, where ultimately I've found my passion.

On favorite IF projects: I liked Sentosa a lot [an architectural previsualization project with Frank Gehry].  It was the perfect mixture of a killer team, live action, 3d, 2d, architecture... everything. I really enjoyed The Number 23, it felt like an old-school main title, the kind I remember watching Michelle [Dougherty] work on when I shared an office with her back in 1999. Lots of hands on work and practical shoots, the most fun part of the process for me.

On working in production at IF: The long hours are great!  Actually, I like the process - honestly. If you don't like figuring things out like technology, how to shoot elements on the back patio or where to print full bleed posters at 3am, then this job probably isn't for you. This job, unlike lots of production or post-production, offers a chance to get involved in every step of a project, from conception to delivery.

On alternate careers: I'd be a conceptual artist making solar panel sculptures in West Texas, for art and profit. Something that helped the world a little more, but maybe that's too ambitious. I'll start with a few panels on my roof for now.
